Don’t Make These Home Security MistakesOctober 14, 2016
Home security is vital in today’s day and age, no matter where you live or how nice and quiet your neighborhood may seem. Thieves are getting smarter and more daring, so protecting yourself should be a top priority. The following mistakes are those that most homeowners will make at some point. Avoiding them could mean the difference between protecting yourself and becoming a victim.
#1 – Installing Security Signs with No Security System
Everyone likes to save money, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with saving wherever you can – as long as it doesn’t compromise your safety. One of the biggest mistakes that homeowners make is setting up signs and stickers that advertise a home security system without actually installing the system. Once upon a time, burglars couldn’t tell whether or not you actually had security systems set up. These days, though, things have changed. It’s easy enough for a burglar to find out whether you actually have a system, so simply putting up the signs isn’t enough to keep them out.
#2 – Not Setting Your Alarm for Quick Trips
If you have an alarm system in your home, then chances are good that you’ve thought to yourself, “I’m just going to the convenience store a few blocks away, so I don’t need to set my alarm.” Unfortunately, this kind of mistake can end up with your home getting robbed and you coming home to intruders. You should set your alarm and home security system each time you leave your home, even if you’ll only be gone a few minutes. Burglars will often “stalk” you and wait until they physically see you leave your home to strike.
#3 – Setting Up an Unmonitored Alarm System
Next, remember that there isn’t much point in having an alarm system if you’re not going to have a monitored alarm system. After all, if you aren’t home and someone breaks into your home, the alarm will go off – but is there anyone to receive that alarm and respond? If you don’t set up a monitored system, the thieves have a better chance at getting away with your property. Don’t take that chance; make sure your home security system is monitored.
#4 – Thinking They Don’t Need Home Security
Finally, there are millions and millions of people across the country who feel safe enough in their homes and believe that a home security system isn’t necessary. However, if you’ve spent any time watching the news lately, then you know that nowhere is 100% safe – not even your own backyard. While you shouldn’t be afraid to get out and enjoy your life, you should also do what you can to protect your home and property. Home security systems are always a great idea, no matter how safe your neighborhood might seem.
Making these home security mistakes could cost you your property, your home, or even your own personal safety if you’re unlucky enough to catch an intruder in the act. Make sure you don’t make these mistakes, and you’ll be well on your way to keeping your home and family as safe as you possibly can.
