5 Inexpensive Ways to Deter BurglarsJanuary 27, 2016
Instances of burglary have increased tremendously over the past few years, and this has resulted in many home owners having alarm systems installed. While these are an extremely effective deterrent in most cases, there are a few other ways to help deter burglars, all of which are highly affordable.
1. High Quality Outdoor Lighting
This has proven to be one of the most effective burglary deterrents in that would-be burglars don’t want everyone to be able to see what they are doing. When installing outdoor lighting, be sure to purchase high quality light fittings that have specifically been designed for outdoor use. These will not only provide a lot of light; they will also have been designed to be waterproof. LED lights provide the best quality lighting and they are the most energy-efficient option as well.
2. Camera Surveillance
There are many inexpensive camera surveillance systems available, which allow home owners to see what is taking place in and around their properties. Most systems can be hooked up in such a way that they can even be viewed when property owners are across the world, provided that there is a reliable internet connection. Home owners can choose whether they would like to have these systems record what takes place or not as well.
3. Beware of Dog Signs
These can be a highly effective deterrent – even if there is no dog present on a property. Many burglars will not take the risk of entering properties like these if they know that they stand a chance of becoming an oversized chew toy or if there is a dog that will raise the alarm for neighbors by barking at them.
4. A Clean Curbside
Many property owners find that they experience burglaries after they have purchased expensive gadgets or appliances such as large-screen TVs, laptops or even brand name clothing items – because they advertise the fact by placing all of the packaging and boxes out on the curb for everyone to see. When purchasing items like these, it is best to rip the packaging into small pieces or even burn the boxes if possible.
5. A Well-kept Yard
Burglars prefer to target properties where their activities will not be noticed easily and/or where they can gain access as quickly as possible. There have been many instances where overhanging trees, trash cans and other large items have been used to gain access to properties. Keeping trees, shrubs and bushes trimmed away from windows and boundary walls will help reduce the possibility of a particular property becoming a target. It is recommended that large items such as trash cans, ladders and other items like these be stored out of sight as well.
In cases where camera systems are going to be installed, it is recommended that this be done by a reputable security company, as failure to do so could result in the installation not being acknowledged by insurance companies in the event of claims being lodged. When used in conjunction with monitored alarm systems, the above mentioned measures can be great burglary deterrents.
