5 Interesting Gadgets to Help with Home ProtectionFebruary 19, 2016

When property owners think about protecting their homes, the first item that usually comes to mind is an alarm system. However, nowadays there are many more products and options available, with some of them even being classified as cool or hi-tech. Here are just a few examples of these.

1. Keyless Entry Systems

Regardless of whether you have guests staying over, kids who misplace house keys or you are simply tired of lugging a huge set of keys around yourself, keyless entry systems can be the answer for you. Devices like the Lockitron can be used to unlock your house door with your mobile phone, which is extremely handy if you are not able to meet whoever needs to gain access to the house. This helps increase security levels because you will no longer have to try and remember who all has keys to your home.

2. Motion Sensor Lights

These can be used virtually anywhere in and around your home and if high quality outdoor units are purchased, they can provide coverage on patios, walkways and yards as well. Motion sensor lights work by turning on as soon as the units detect movement of any sort, so if you have pets, they will need to be placed high enough to prevent false triggers. Some of these lights are available in solar-powered options as well, which means that you won’t have to remember to change batteries every few months.

3. Siren Padlocks

Siren padlocks work by sounding a rather loud alarm if they are moved or tampered with in any way. In most cases, they emit sounds of 100 decibels or more, which will be enough to send virtually any would-be burglar running. In addition to the horrendous noise they make, the shafts on these locks are usually toughened to the point where they will be able to resist most types of saw or bolt cutters.

4. Laser Tripwire Devices

If you thought that these only existed in the movies, you’d be very much mistaken. These devices work by setting off an ear-piercing alarm when the laser beam that is emitted by them, is walked through or broken in any other way. Some of the newer devices have the ability to be hooked up to camera systems, which enables them to take photos of intruders that may have gained access into your home.

5. Biometric Fingerprint Safes

Although this technically doesn’t protect your house itself, it provides a measure of protection for any valuable items and documents that are stored at home. Documents like passports, spare credit cards, cash, mortgage agreements and other personal items that are highly confidential need to be stored as securely as possible, and what better way to store these than inside a safe that requires the fingerprint of you or another trusted family member to open?

Although each of these devices can play an excellent role in keeping your home and possessions safe, it is still up to you to ensure that you take the necessary measures such as locking up before going out and keeping your yard well-maintained. This will make your home as unappealing as possible to would-be burglars.
