With National Fire Week Just Behind Us, Is Your Home Fire Proof?October 21, 2014
Fires in the home can happen to anyone at any time of the day or night, which is why it is essential to be prepared at all times. Although many home owners think that their preparation is complete once smoke detectors have been installed, this is not the case. There are a few other ways in which you can ensure that every member of your family is prepared to react appropriately in case of a fire breaking out in your home.
Maintenance is Important
If a fire alarm system is already present throughout your home, it will need to be tested and maintained on a regular basis. In most cases, this will involve replacing the batteries in smoke detectors once a year and actually testing them to ensure that they are working properly. Fire extinguishers should also be placed in strategic locations throughout the house such as in the kitchen, patio or barbecue areas and in the garage. These should also be serviced and checked at least once a year and everyone should know how to use them.
Have Regular Practice Drills
While many people think that practice drills are only for hospitals, schools and office blocks, this is not the case. Families should develop an emergency evacuation plan and practice it at least twice a year. The plan can involve setting off the fire alarm system and then showing each member of the family how to navigate through the house in order to reach the safest and closest exit. If there are very young children or elderly people living in the house, it is important to ensure that they are accommodated and assisted in the event of a fire occurring as well. Your pets will also need to be taken into consideration, as they can have a habit of going into hiding at the first sign of commotion.
Install a Fire Alarm System
If you do not have a fire alarm system in your home, now is the perfect time to have one installed. Most alarm companies will be able to install one of these systems in your home within a few days at the most. Once installed, you will be provided with usage and maintenance instructions. Home owners who already have an existing alarm system will often be able to have a fire alarm system installed by the alarm company at a discounted rate as well. After the system has been installed, it is imperative that each member of the family be taught how to use it properly, as this could make the difference between life and death in case of an emergency.
Many home owners make the mistake of selecting the cheapest fire alarm system possible. However, this is not recommended because at the end of the day, there is absolutely no price that can be placed on the safety of your loved ones. When selecting a company to install your system, it is better to base your selection on reputation and service levels instead of price alone.
