How to Find the Crime Rates near Your HomeJune 23, 2014

Thanks to the decline of morals in our society these days, very few places across the US can claim to have a crime-free status. However, there are some areas that are well-known for their low crime rates. If you are considering relocating to a new neighborhood to escape crime, this may not always be possible. However, there are a few simple ways in which you can find out about crime rates in your neighborhood.

Speak with Other Residents

These days, most people do not even know who their next door neighbors are. However, one of the easiest ways to find out whether specific types of crime are prevalent in your area is to get to know the people around you. In most instances, you will find that neighbors and fellow residents will be more than willing to share information pertaining to crimes that have occurred in the area over the years. When you are out shopping or even walking your dog, it may be a good idea to greet or even stop and chat with storekeepers and passers-by, as this is one of the easiest ways to get to know the people who live close by to you.

Do Online Research

These days, most cities have dedicated websites, which should provide some sort of indication regarding crime rates and statistics. If the city or neighborhood you live in has a dedicated website for its police department, you will normally also be able to find information here pertaining to neighborhood safety and the types of crime that have been prevalent over the years. Should there not be a dedicated website available, you may have to pay a personal visit to your local police station and make inquiries there.

Inquire about Neighborhood Watch Programs

More and more areas are becoming aware of the importance of having a good neighborhood watch system in place. If there is one in your neighborhood that is active, it is wise to join up, because these organizations normally also keep records pertaining to the crimes that have been committed there. Having an organized and well-run neighborhood watch program will also provide you with peace of mind in knowing that everyone is looking out for each other and reporting any suspicious activities that may occur from time to time.

Don’t Become a Statistic

Regardless of whether an area has a good neighborhood watch program or not, more and more people are having alarm systems installed in their homes and businesses. While they may not be a guarantee against a burglary or other forms of crime, alarm systems usually act as excellent deterrents for all but the most determined criminals. When installing an alarm system, you should not base your selection on price alone, as many cheaper units are not able to provide as much protection as their more updated counterparts.

Even if crime rates in your area seem to be impossibly high, simply being alert and noticing anything out of the ordinary can go a long way in helping to protect your family as well as provide a safer living environment for everyone else in your neighborhood as well.
